What does flow rate mean in a showerhead? Flow rate is how much water is used and measured in gallons per minute (GPM). If you want to save water (and money on your utility bills! ), look for a lower flow rate — 2 GPM or less is water-efficien t. Since 1992, all showerheads have been mandated to have a flow rate of 2. 5 GPM. But more recently, local governments have regulated even lower flow rates. So if you live in places like New York City or Colorado, you're limited to a 2. 0 GPM standard. California has an even stricter standard: 1. 8 GPM. But don't worry: A low flow rate doesn't necessarily mean a less powerful spray. just that less water is used. In terms of power, some showerheads can actually increase water pressure, with a pressure-increasing massage head that channels more water to make up for low-pressure situations.
